A reading is taken on the time scale through a sighting block and this reading is transferred to the disc on top of the dial by rotating the finger to the time indicated.   The disc has correction curves marked on it for the 1st day of each month and the amount of correction required can be read along the finger scale.  This correction is then applied by turning the correction scale so that the amount of correction is in line with the sun reading.  The mean  time is then found opposit the GMT index or the BST (British Summer Time) index.

The correction curves and the scales are colour-coded to fascilitate the operations.

The photographs above show a quarter  scale model of the dial made in brass. There are only four correction curves on this model (covering 3 months) but a full size dial would have curves for six months on each side of the disc which would then have to be turned over twice each year.

Ideally, the dial should be about 600mm (24") diameter and made in stainless steel.
